Frequently Asked Questions about Easy Roasting Apples

Are Baked Apples Healthy?

Yes! They are! Apples are FULL of great nutrition and baking them preserves that nutrition. Of course, you could argue that what you fill them with augments or decreases the nutritional value, but that is up to your own personal ideas about diets.

How Do You Use Up Apples?

How Do You Core and Apple for Baking?

I like to use a coring tool, that makes it so easy. However, you might not have one. If not, you core an apple just like you core a tomato and I have those instructions listed right here:  how to core a tomato.

If you are interested in the coring tool I have, it’s here: you can click the photo to go through to Amazon and compare prices. I use Deiss tools and I like them, they stay VERY sharp even with daily use (I use my stuff A LOT!).

What Are The Best Baking Apples

You’ll see that in this post I used Fiji and Gala apples.  They worked just fine but generally speaking, you’ll want to use…

  • Jonagold
  • Honeycrisp
  • Braeburn
  • Pink Lady
  • Winesap

Things to Consider..

  • If, like me, you live way out in the boonies, and you can only get what you can get, choose a sweet apple (red or golden delicious will work).
  • You will want to avoid using Granny Smith for this recipe.

Can You Bake With Gala Apples?

Yes, you can. Take a look at the photos in this post. Some of those apples are Gala’s. They change a dark color when baked but taste great.

Can I Freeze These Easy Roasting Apples?

Yes and No. Yes, you can freeze them HOWEVER, they will be much more mushy after being in the freezer and that might not be something you are going for and I don’t recommend it.

What Can I Serve With Easy Roasting Apples?

Apples always go great with pork! I would recommend this baked pork loin or crockpot Lexington Style Barbecue! Then you could do some Red Barbecue Slaw.

Not into the pork? How about these spinach stuffed shells? So delicious!

Tips and Tricks for Easy Roasting Apples

  • Cut a little flat spot on the bottom of the apples so that they stand up straight and sit right on a plate.
  • Use sweet apples only for this recipe. Avoid Granny Smith, she is too tart for this.
  • You’ll want to put the sugar mix into the bottom of the apple so that it mixes well with the juices of the apple as it bakes. That makes all the difference.
  • These apples are runny and juicy when you eat them, so keep that in mind for serving. I recommend serving in a bowl. I have these in a plate for photos, but that is just so you can see what they look like.
  • If you have filled your apples half way with the sugar mix and still have some left, stop and set that aside. Sprinkle it over the top of the apples after you put the oat mix in.
  • Ice Cream is lovely with this dish!
  • A dusting with cinnamon just after they are out of the oven is a lovely touch.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 Sweet Apples I used Fuji and Gala here, but any sweet apple will work

For the First Filling

  • 3/4 Cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

For the Second Filling

  • 1/3 C Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 Cup quick cooking oats oatmeal
  • 1/3 Cup all purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons sweet cream unsalted butter softened.
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

Before baking

  • zest of one orange
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 3 Tbs honey

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350. Using a sharp knife, cut off the top 1/2 inch of each apple. Then using a coring tool, remove the cores. Then using a small scoop, scoop out about 1/3 of the meat of each apple. Place the apples in a 10 inch skillet.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon and place by spoonfuls into the bottom of each apple cup. Then, once that bowl is empty, in the same bowl, mix the oats, flour, butter, salt and orange zest together. Use your fingers and crumble the mix together, then pack by spoonfuls into the remaining space in the top of each apple. Once full, make sure each apple is up right in the pan.
  • Mix the Orange juice, honey and orange zest together in a small bowl. Gently pour the mixture into the bottom of the pan and place the skillet in the oven on the center rack.
  • If you have extra filling left, sprinkle it over the top of the apples in the pan.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes until the apples are easily pierced with a knife. Drizzle the pan juices over the apples before serving.

A VERSE TO SHARE

I’m super bad about holding on to anger and resentment. I mutter to myself under my breath during alone time about things I’ve been wronged about. Do you? I’m not proud of this, but I’m sharing it in hopes that you see yourself too.

That just burns a black spot in your heart. It doesn’t help anyone and it only hurts you. I know this to be true. Let’s stop it. OK?
