You absolutely can play out that very scene by following these simple and easy instructions for how to make Blueberry pie with Blueberry pie filling because it is, in fact, easy as pie!

There are just a few things to know to make that canned filling taste just like homemade!

Of course, at Loaves and Dishes we like to make things from scratch but sometimes you just have to get on with your day. Blueberry Pie filling makes things so much easier.

The Blueberries are picked, cooked, spiced and jarred. The only thing left to do is to put them in the pie and that part is EASY!

I’ll show you how today!

You might have a few questions about the pie in question and I’ll do my best to answer those questions here.

CAN YOU USE A STORE BOUGHT CRUST?

Yes, of course, for this recipe use either a homemade crust or a store bought crust. The Pillsbury refrigerated crusts are the best, and I’ve tried them all. Do NOT get the frozen pie crusts, those have a taste that everyone recognizes as “NOT HOMEMADE”.

Place your blueberry pie in the refrigerator within two hours. I admit that although I recommend the fridge for pie, I do let mine sit out on the counter covered in plastic wrap.

CAN I MAKE BLUEBERRY USING FROZEN BLUEBERRIES OR OTHER CANNED BLUEBERRIES?

Yes, you can definitely make a blueberry pie using frozen blueberries or other canned blueberries, but that is the topic for a different post. Check back with Loaves and Dishes frequently for more great pie recipes!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HOW TO MAKE BLUEBERRY  PIE WITH BLUEBERRY PIE FILLING

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
  • The pie always tastes just fine if you forget to paint with an egg wash at the end BUT it will look much prettier and finished with the egg wash. The egg wash browns the top of the pie perfectly.
  • If you only have one can of pie filling, that is fine, it will make a fine pie, the pie will simply be thinner.
  • Always place a baking sheet under your pie in the oven because sometimes pies drip and no one wants a mess in their oven.
  • Feel free to cut pretty designs into your pie top. If this is your FIRST apple pie, you might want to go with simple slits. Don’t forget the slits because steam has to escape and that is how it gets out.
  • You can also cut your upper pie crust into strips and weave the top for a nice effect.
  • Tarragon and Lavender are both lovely flavors with blueberry. If you have either, you could add ½ tsp dried to the bowl mix before pouring into the pie crust. That said, if you have a “meat and potatoes” only palette in your household, then you might want to hold off on that.

Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts the kind that comes rolled up. I use Pillsbury. Don’t use the store brand.
  • 2 21 oz can of blueberry pie filling
  • 1 tsp real lemon juice
  • ½ tsp fresh ground ginger
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract
  • 1 egg white

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425.
  • Line a 9” pie plate with one of your pie crusts, set the other to the side. (Do not crimp the edges of the pie yet)
  • Pour the blueberry pie filling into a medium sized bowl. Be sure to scrape the side of the can with a rubber spatula to get all of the filling out.
  • Using your rubber spatula, gently mix the lemon juice, ginger, vanilla and almond flavoring into the pie filling.
  • Once well incorporated, pour the pie filling into the pie crust that is in the pie plate.
  • Use the other pie crust and lay it over the surface of the blueberry pie filling, centering it so that the edges come together.
  • Make your fingers damp with a little water and crimp the edges of the pie together by pinching them to make a fluted design. If you aren’t sure how to do this, you can instead use the tines of a fork to mash the two pie crusts together.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the pie crust
  • Using a pastry brush, the back of a spoon or even a barbecue brush paint the top crust with the egg white completely.
  • Place on the center rack of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the pie filling appears to be bubbling. You will want to place a baking sheet below your pie to catch any drips while it is baking.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool well before serving.

Notes

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
  • The pie always tastes just fine if you forget to paint with an egg wash at the end BUT it will look much prettier and finished with the egg wash.  The egg wash browns the top of the pie perfectly.

A VERSE TO SHARE.

This is probably not the right place to share this story, but am I ever worried about what I share here? It appears, “no”.

Last night I had a dream that a hurricane had passed by and my area was in danger of flooding. I was with a lot of people who I didn’t know staying temporarily in some type of multi floor structure. Our dog Leroy was with us, but he wasn’t allowed in the building.

As the waters began to rise, I ran out to get the dog who was chained in a barn with some other dogs. I kept calling the dog “Wendi” and she was just a tiny puppy instead of our fully grown male dog.

I carried baby Wendi through the splashy puddles and back up the stairs to our room. Mark kept telling me that she wouldn’t be allowed inside with these people.

My reply was that it is my job to keep her safe and I would do it “Hell or High Water”, which ironically, we were facing.

When I woke, I pondered and thought about why my dog turned into a puppy and why his name changed to MY name!

Then I thought about the verse I had been studying yesterday.

How do you keep your inner child safe from the rising flood waters of the world? It IS your job to protect her.

Matthew 18: 1-9

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!

If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Thank you for sharing the story about your dream with your pup. I enjoyed it. It reminded me that 8 need to read God’s Word today. I’m about to make my first blueberry pie using canned blueberries and the Pillsberry pie crust that you mention. I don’t think I’m going to put anything in it except maybe a little lemon to add some tart flavor. Thank you for confirming that I can use a canned blueberry and easy store-bought piecrust.

Yuck. It totally took away the wonderful taste of the blueberries. I wish I wouldn’t have added anything to the pie filling mix.

I added some small chopped apple to the recipe one time and it also works. This is the third time I have made this. A couple folks thought perhaps a bit too much ginger so I cut back just a little. This is a very good recipe. I love making pies, especially fruit pies and I have been making them for about 50 years. Thank you.

This pie came out great except for one thing...Too Much Blueberry Pie Filling! I even put some aside to make tarts because it looked like too much. Some pies are great with lots of filling like Apple pie but when it comes to blueberries it's just too much. The blueberries should compliment the crust. Even with filling left on my plate I felt like my crust was lost in the mix.

Thank you for the vanilla, lemon juice and ginger suggestion. That was a nice touch!

Hi, I guess some people like more and some like less. The Pillsbury refrigerated crusts that I recommend make a deep large pie. If you are using a different crust, that might be part of the difference. Glad it turned out good anyway.
