Equipment

  • 1 medium sauce pan
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • large wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs butter
  • ½ slice bacon cut into small pieces
  • 2 slices onion chopped
  • 15 oz can unseasoned black beans. Drained
  • ½ Cup chicken broth
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp taco seasoning
  • ½ tsp granulated white sugar
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until just soft.
  • Place the small pieces of bacon into the butter and cook until softened. Add the chopped onion and continue cooking until the onion is soft.
  • Add the drained beans all at once followed by the chicken broth.
  • Add the garlic powder, taco seasoning and sugar.
  • Heat over medium heat until the beans are bubbly and fragrant.
  • Taste and add salt and pepper to taste
  • Garnish as you please with jalapeno, cilantro or serve beans with rice, chicken, corn or in a burrito, taco, over a salad, etc

Notes

  • Drain the water from the can off of the beans before starting your cooking project
  • If you have SEASONED CANNED BLACK BEANS, don’t do anything to them except open the can and dump it in the sauce pot to heat.  
  • In addition, Black Beans, like most things in the kitchen improve with the addition of salt, spicy heat, acid, fat and smoke and that is why the ingredients for the recipe are as they are.
  • Once your canned black beans are cooked on the stove, they will be ready for any dish you want to add them to OR you can simply eat them plain.
  • In addition, Black Beans are terrific added to a burrito or taco, added to a salad, mixed with corn, mixed with rice, as a side to chicken or even eaten plain.
