Ingredients

  • 2 Tbs Oil
  • 2 pounds hamburger
  • 1 /2 cup onion chopped
  • 1 /2 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 1 /2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 /2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1 /3 cup flour
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 14.5 oz Can of black beans
  • 1 14.5 oz can cannellini beans
  • 4 cups tomato juice
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar

Instructions

  • Heat oil in the bottom of a large stock pot and add the onion. Cook over medium heat until the onion is translucent.
  • Add ground beef, chili powder, salt, pepper in a skillet and cook until beef is browned..
  • Remove pot from the burner and mix in the flour.
  • Return the pot to the burner and heat over medium heat adding the water. Bring to a boil and add the beans and the tomato juice.
  • Bring to a boil and add brown sugar and stir until simmers. If simmering for a while, you may need to add water as the liquid cooks out.

Notes

    • For a spicy kick, add a little cayenne pepper or chili sauce to your chili.
    • Lots of folks enjoy the taste of a green bell pepper in their chili, if you do, chop some into pencil eraser size pieces and add when you put the onion in large pan.
    • This is an easy busy day meal and is terrific on a snow day. 
    • Top the whole thing with cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream. A side of warm bread is perfect!
    • You can make this in the slow cooker for a handy meal that's ready when you get home. Just brown the meat and onions and then put the whole thing in the crockpot and set on low. It'll be ready in 6-8 hours. 
    • This is great served with a chili dog and some tortilla chips
Substitutions
Ground Beef - Sausage, Meat substitute, ground pork, ground chicken or ground turkey. 
Onion - 2 tsp Onion Powder
Black and Cannellini Beans - Kidney and Pinto or any soup type beans
Brown Sugar - Raw Sugar or 3/4 cup white sugar plus 1/4 cup maple syrup
