Here's What You'll Need:

ingredients on cutting board
  • Carrots - You can use any type of carrot but whole large carrots are best for this recipe
  • Knife - make sure your knife is sharp
  • Vegetable peeler - I prefer this peeler that slides on my finger like a ring! You can find them on Amazon
  • A pot with water - Fill a pot with water to create the steam
  • A steamer basket - anything with holes, that fits over your pot will work fine. I used a strainer.

Frequently Asked Questons (FAQ's)

How long do carrots take to steam?

Carrots take between 5-15 minutes to steam.  This depends on the size of the carrot pieces. You'll know they are done when a fork easily slides into the carrot. (Don't burn yourself).

How can I steam carrots without a steamer?

While it is an inexpensive kitchen gadget you don’t have to run out and buy one for this recipe.  If you have a heat resistant colander, strainer, or any other item that will allow the steam to pass through, it will work fine.

Is it better to boil or steam carrots?

Boiling and steaming carrots will bring about similar results and flavors but steaming does preserve some of the natural vitamins that boiling leaches out. It just depends on which you find easier or more convenient.

What Other Flavors Go With Steamed Carrots?

Steamed Carrots go GREAT with some other dishes! Try one of these combos today!

  • Shrimp sauce - this sauce works great for picky kids!
  • Peas! What goes together better than peas and carrots? Nothing!

Tips and Tricks

  • The slotted bowl should NOT be submerged in the water
  • Cut the carrots into even pieces so that they all cook evenly.
  •  Fork tender means that you can easily stick a fork in the carrot and remove it with minimal force or work.

PRO TIP: Any item that is heat resistant, and that will allow steam to pass through it can be used as a steamer basket.  You do not have to have a steamer basket to steam vegetables.
