HOW TO COOK CANNED HOMINY

Delicious corn flavored and interesting to chew hominy is the answer to so many dinner time questions! Here is how to showcase hominy for a delicious side dish and I show you how to cook canned hominy!


Hominy is a perfect and easy side dish to prepare for dinner. It is ready in just minutes with minimal preparations. It’s easy to fix and something that kids love too!

WHAT IS HOMINY?

Hominy is field corn that has been treated with lye so that the husky kernel from the outside of the corn. No worries, the lye is washed away.
Hominy can then be ground into GRITS (you know, MY FAVORITE!), flour or many other favorite corn products! One of those is the recipe on this page!

WHERE DO I BUY HOMINY?

You can buy hominy at your local grocery store or through your online grocery resource like Amazon! 

WHERE CAN I FIND HOMINY IN THE GROCERY STORE?

Hominy is found in the grocery store in the canned vegetables section and you can usually find it in the hispanic section as well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) AND TIPS AND TRICKS

DOES HOMINY EXPIRE?

Yes, hominy, like every other canned good expires. Look at your can for the expiration date.

DOES CANNED HOMINY NEED TO BE COOKED?

Canned hominy is already cooked and you can eat it straight from the can. That said, it will taste better if you cook it first. See the recipe at the bottom of the page.

HOW LONG IS HOMINY GOOD FOR?

Once your hominy is cooked it will be good for about five days if kept covered and in the refrigerator.

CAN I FREEZE HOMINY?

Yes, once you have cooked your hominy, you can freeze it very well.

Place in a resealable freezer safe bag

Remove as much air as possible

Label the bag with contents and date

Place in the freezer.

Use within three months.

CAN I FRY MY HOMINY?

Yes, you can fry the hominy instead of cooking the way I describe in the recipe card and video below.

To fry hominy…

Drain the can of hominy well.

Melt 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in  your frying pan (substitute butter if you do not have bacon grease).

Pu the hominy in the frying pan and allow to cook on each side about 2-3 minutes.

Use hominy in any way that you would usually use corn…

  • In casseroles
  • Try it in soups
  • Perfect with eggs!

As a side dish to replace potatoes.

You need..

  1. A saucepan
  2. A spoon to stir.

First drain your hominy and then put everything into a medium sized saucepan.

Heat till bubbling and heated through. Then serve!

Ingredients

  • 1 15.5 oz can hominy
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 Tbs butter
  • 1 strip crispy bacon
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Drain the can of hominy
  • Pour all of the other ingredients into a medium sized saucepan over medium heat on the stove top.
  • Heat saucepan till ingredients are heated through
  • serve hot

Notes

Hominy may be yellow or white.  The yellow has a slightly stronger flavor.  The difference is because of the type of corn used.

I just drain the water, put in a tablespoon of butter and a tiny bit of broth to help with flavor, salt and pepper, and some chopped cilantro. My family *loves* it like this! Hard to find now, except the *huge* can at Walmart. While I buy that when extended family comes, I like the smaller cans for just us.
