WHAT IS HOMINY?

Hominy is field corn that has been treated with lye so that the husky kernel from the outside of the corn. No worries, the lye is washed away.
Hominy can then be ground into GRITS (you know, MY FAVORITE!), flour or many other favorite corn products! One of those is the recipe on this page!

Hominy is found in the grocery store in the canned vegetables section and you can usually find it in the hispanic section as well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) AND TIPS AND TRICKS

DOES HOMINY EXPIRE?

Yes, hominy, like every other canned good expires. Look at your can for the expiration date.

DOES CANNED HOMINY NEED TO BE COOKED?

Canned hominy is already cooked and you can eat it straight from the can. That said, it will taste better if you cook it first. See the recipe at the bottom of the page.

HOW LONG IS HOMINY GOOD FOR?

Once your hominy is cooked it will be good for about five days if kept covered and in the refrigerator.

CAN I FREEZE HOMINY?

Yes, once you have cooked your hominy, you can freeze it very well.

Place in a resealable freezer safe bag

Remove as much air as possible

Label the bag with contents and date

Place in the freezer.

Use within three months.

CAN I FRY MY HOMINY?

Yes, you can fry the hominy instead of cooking the way I describe in the recipe card and video below.

To fry hominy…

Drain the can of hominy well.

Melt 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in  your frying pan (substitute butter if you do not have bacon grease).

Pu the hominy in the frying pan and allow to cook on each side about 2-3 minutes.

WHAT OTHER WAYS CAN I USE HOMINY?

Use hominy in any way that you would usually use corn…

  • In casseroles
  • Try it in soups
  • Perfect with eggs!

As a side dish to replace potatoes.

Why drain, then add more water?

Hi Mary, You drain and then add more water (or chicken stock) because the water in the water in the can often tastes a lot like a can and has a lot of starchy run off from the hominy. That's a flavor that just isn't good in my book and you do yourself and the flavors of your dish a favor when you just start with fresh water or stock. Thanks for asking!

I fry pork chops in cast iron, and remove them from the pan, and fry the hominy in the pork chop fond, scraping up bits of goodness with it.

I love hominy. I prepare it just like my grandmother did for me. Heat with Butter, salt, and pepper, pour scrambled egg mixture over the hominy, and cook scrambled eggs.

Making with scrambled eggs does sound good! Have you ever had it as a standalone side dish? It's wonderful!

I love hominy! The only way I've made it is from my grandma! Saute onion in butter, lard or bacon grease, add a drained can of hominy and saute until the way you like it. I have found if I don't saute the onion longe enough it's too cruchy. Now I've read your recipe and how much simpler to just add powdered onion! My dad used to make us scrambled eggs with corn, now that I read the recipe and reviews, I'm going to switch corn to hominy. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Hi Grammy! Thanks for leaving comment and I hope your hominy turns out just the way you want! I love using real onion in recipes, but sometimes it is easier and you get more onion flavor if you use the powdered type. Have a great day!

I have a recipe that says cook 1/2 cup of milk With some butter. Add 1 cup of Harmony and one egg and bake for a half hour at 350
It made sense and I bought a can of hominy. But Now I am not sure. Do I need to smash the Hominy first?

      Hi Carolyn,

I'm not sure about your recipe, but I wouldn't think that you would need to smash the hominy first. Best wishes!

In the video you mention adding vinegar - but there is no vinegar listed in the ingredients. And if there is vinegar, what kind do you recommend and how much?

Hi Beth! If you are making one can, a 1/2 tsp (just a little tiny splash) should do it. I'll go fix the recipe right now. Thanks for catching that.

Hominy For Dummies question - What are you doing with all that water that you're cooking the hominy with? Do you drain it before serving, or do you boil it down first? I am so confused.

Hi Shelby, I'm sorry it wasn't clear! So, first you drain off the water that is in the can. Then you add back 1/4 Cup of water. (or you can use chicken stock for more flavor!). Then you heat it up in the pan on the stove. The quarter cup of water may cook off, if it does, add more water/chicken stock. If it doesn't and there is MORE water in the pan than you want, just drain it off OR use a slotted spoon to dip the hominy out with and it will fall back into the pan as you scoop it out onto your plate. Does that help? If not, just let me know and I'll find another way to explain it. 🙂 . Enjoy!

We cook our hominy in a frying pan in which we have cooked and browned pork sausage links. Brown the links;remove them from the pan;add the hominy to the pan and stir.Cook the hominy until it starts to get brown from the sausage drippings Serve it with maple syrup.Delicious!
