Hominy is field corn that has been treated with lye so that the husky kernel from the outside of the corn. No worries, the lye is washed away.

DOES HOMINY EXPIRE?

Yes, hominy, like every other canned good expires. Look at your can for the expiration date.

Canned hominy is already cooked and you can eat it straight from the can. That said, it will taste better if you cook it first. See the recipe at the bottom of the page.

HOW LONG IS HOMINY GOOD FOR?

Once your hominy is cooked it will be good for about five days if kept covered and in the refrigerator.

CAN I FREEZE HOMINY?

Yes, once you have cooked your hominy, you can freeze it very well.

Label the bag with contents and date

Place in the freezer.

Yes, you can fry the hominy instead of cooking the way I describe in the recipe card and video below.

To fry hominy…

I just drain the water, put in a tablespoon of butter and a tiny bit of broth to help with flavor, salt and pepper, and some chopped cilantro. My family *loves* it like this! Hard to find now, except the *huge* can at Walmart. While I buy that when extended family comes, I like the smaller cans for just us.

      @Steve F.,
I have made corn pudding but not Hominy pudding. Is that what you are referring to? Or with pudding mixed together or 2 separate dishes served side by side?
      Interesting...!

@TB, Mexican hominy is very different from American hominy. There is an inedible shell, it seems, on the outside of the kernel. If you want to make great pozole, it is best with Bush's white hominy, or yellow, or another American hominy brand (white is chewier, yellow is pastier).

Interesting, I have never heard hominy cooked like this. We always boil the pieces of corn grain from scratch then when tender we add cornmeal or blended green plantain or oats to thicken, coconut milk, condensed milk a litte sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and vailla. This is the most delicious porridge on earth.

Hi Carla, Ive never heard of hominy cooked the way you are explaining either. It's good to get a different perspective though. I think it's importqnt to point out that I'm using canned hominy here and not the dried grains or whole corn that isn't cooked yet.

I'm from the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking in Western Pennsylvania and grew up with hominy. I boil it with a pinch of red pepper then drain and add it to frying pork chops. Cook it in the pork chop drippings until it is just right. Then serve it with the chops and apple sauce on the side.

OH that's so sad! I don't know how one would go about finding Hominy in cans other than Amazon maybe? I bet that would be cost prohibitive though.

I buy it in cans at Giant Eagle in Ohio. Other grocers carry it, too.

I grew up on canned hominy with only butter the way my mom cooked it. I had a large can of gold hominy and thought I would branch out. I tried your recipe and doubled the ingredients. Let me tell you I nearly ate the whole thing in one sitting! I can't wait to make this again. Thank you

Hi Janina, This recipe (and most with canned foods) is very versatile and you can add a little of this and that as needed. The vinegar gives this recipe a nice little added pop. You can give it a little splash (about 1 tsp) and see how it brightens up the flavors of the food).
