Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

What Fruit Goes With Watermelon?

Lots of fruits will go with watermelon, but the grapefruit adds a certain zing to this summertime salad that will have your family and friends begging for more!

How Long Does This Watermelon Fruit Salad Last?

You’ll want to use this up in about 24 hours. Keep in covered in the refrigerator after serving. The watermelon becomes very watery after a few hours.

Be sure to pour off additional juices that accumulate if they are overwhelming your salad.

Can This Recipe Be Frozen?

No, this recipe doesn’t freeze well. You would need a super fast freeze operation to make that work and most of us don’t have that at home. Best to just gobble it down right away!

The good news is that this recipe is fairly low in calories!

Can I Make This Recipe Ahead of Time?

Sure make it earlier in the day you want to use it or up to 24 hours ahead. You will note that it becomes watery the longer it sits, so best to use as soon as possible.

Be sure to keep refrigerated after making.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Watermelon Fruit Salad

  • Cut your watermelon into bite sized pieces, no more than about a 1 inch cube.
  • Be sure to avoid getting the white parts of the grapefruit rind in your salad, those are bitter.
  • Cut out the heavy skin between sections of the grapefruit if possible.
  • When making the dressing, it is important to taste it to see if it is sweet enough for you, if you notice that your watermelon isn’t that sweet, make the dressing sweeter.
  • A wonderful substitution for the oil is the blood orange flavored type (you can find this at specialty olive oil stores). Same for the vinegar, a grapefruit vinegar works perfectly.
  • This recipe makes quite a lot of salad and if you are serving this for only 2-4 people, I would recommend cutting the amounts in half (except the grapefruit, its fine to use a whole one with half a watermelon).

PRO TIP: Although personal size watermelons tend to be about the same size, there is some difference, if you notice that yours is quite big, you will want to double or even triple the other ingredients. Likewise, if it is smaller, reduce the other ingredients.
