How to Dice an Onion

Dicing an Onion is a basic kitchen skill. It’s easy once you know how. Today we will learn how to mince an onion.

STEP 1. Cut the onion in half from the north pole to the south pole

STEP 2. Peel off the skin and Cut the onion in small layers while holding the onion down with the palm of your hand.

How To Dice an Onion Without Crying

Its the fumes that cause you to cry while dicing an onion. If you can avoid the fumes, then you can avoid crying. 

There are lots of ways that people suggest doing this…

  • You can cut the onion under running water.  I don’t recommend this for dicing an onion, because that makes a mess and it’s slippery and you are holding a sharp knife. That’s not ideal. 
  • Burn a candle next to the cutting board. I’ve heard this, tried it and it didn’t work for me. 
  • Wet the cutting board before cutting the onion.  No, just no. Doesn’t work

What DOES work?

  • I buy onions that generally don’t cause me to cry as badly. For example: Sweet onions, texas onions, vidalia onions and purple onions. 
  • If I HAVE to cute a strong onion, I have a pair of these and they work for me. I think it has to do with the shape of your face. My daughter says they don’t work for her.

Because onions are living vegetables and it’s doing its best to regenerate!

Can I Eat an Onion That Has Sprouted? 

An onion with a new green top springing from its roof is still safe to eat for dicing an onion . You’ll notice that the onion becomes mushy and smelly and attracts flies at a certain point.
