CAN YOU USE A STORE BOUGHT CRUST?

Yes, for this recipe you can use either a homemade crust or a store bought crust. Personally, I think the store bought refrigerated crusts from Pillsbury are excellent. Do NOT get the frozen pie crusts, those have a taste that everyone recognizes as “NOT HOMEMADE”.

HOW LONG CAN AN APPLE PIE SIT OUT?

Place your apple pie in the refrigerator within two hours. That said, my grandmother always left pie out on the counter covered with plastic wrap. I recommend the fridge though.

HOW LONG IS APPLE PIE GOOD FOR?

Your Apple Pie is good for about a week, but I’m sure that your family will have this gobbled up before a week has passed!

CAN I MAKE APPLE PIE USING FROZEN APPLES OR OTHER CANNED APPLES?

Yes, you can definitely make a apple pie using frozen apples or other canned apples, but that is the topic for a different post. Check back with Loaves and Dishes frequently for more great pie recipes!

WHAT GOES GOOD WITH APPLE PIE?

When serving your apple pie, it will be fine to serve it simply and plain, just warm it up a tad.

  • Apple pie is excellent with vanilla ice cream (use a good quality ice cream).
  • Whipped cream or even cool whip is good too.

If you want an excellent meal that you can fix yourself and end the meal with your apple pie then, I recommend the following:

  1. This Jerk Chicken is WOW or you could do a terrific Hamburger, what's more American than that? Maybe Meatloaf!
  2. These black-eyed peas taste absolutely homemade.
  3. How about a steakhouse-quality baked Potato? We all love those!
  4. Use a nice roll or loaf of bread and tell your guests to save room for your fabulous dessert!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HOW TO MAKE APPLE  PIE WITH APPLE PIE FILLING

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium-sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
  • The pie always tastes just fine if you forget to paint with an egg wash at the end BUT it will look much prettier and finished with the egg wash. The egg wash browns the top of the pie perfectly.
  • If you only have one can of pie filling, that is fine, it will make a fine pie, the pie will simply be thinner.
  • Always place a baking sheet under your pie in the oven because sometimes pies drip and no one wants a mess in their oven.
  • Feel free to cut pretty designs into your pie top. If this is your FIRST apple pie, you might want to go with simple slits. Don’t forget the slits because steam has to escape and that is how it gets out.
  • You can also cut your upper pie crust into strips and weave the top for a nice effect.

Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts the kind that comes rolled up. I use Pillsbury. Don’t use the store brand.
  • 2 21 oz can of apple pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon real lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon fresh ground ginger
  • 1 egg white

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425.
  • Line a 9” pie plate with one of your pie crusts, set the other to the side. (Do not crimp the edges of the pie yet)
  • Pour the apple pie filling into a medium sized bowl. Be sure to scrape the side of the can with a rubber spatula to get all of the filling out.
  • Using your rubber spatula, gently mix the lemon juice and ginger into the apple pie filling.
  • Once well incorporated, pour the pie filling into the pie crust that is in the pie plate.
  • Use the other pie crust and lay it over the surface of the apple pie filling, centering it so that the edges come together.
  • Make your fingers damp with a little water and crimp the edges of the pie together by pinching them to make a fluted design. If you aren’t sure how to do this, you can instead use the tines of a fork to mash the two pie crusts together.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the pie crust
  • Using a pastry brush, the back of a spoon or even a barbecue brush paint the top crust with the egg white completely.
  • Place on the center rack of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the pie filling appears to be bubbling. You will want to place a baking sheet below your pie to catch any drips while it is baking.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool well before serving.

Notes

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
***If you prefer a crispier bottom crust, prebake the bottom pie crust in the pie plate for 5-10 minutes until it is as brown as you prefer. This recipe as written makes the pie crust so that it is more moist which may or may not be to your liking.

A VERSE TO SHARE.

I’m going to admit something to you. I have a real problem. Inside my own head I am quite negative about things. I would be so ashamed if someone could hear what goes on in there.

Do you do this too?

You know that we become what we allow ourselves to be associated with, right? That goes for our thoughts too!

For me, it isn’t hard to avoid things in the world, but it IS hard to control my own thoughts, and yet I must. You do too.

How do you do it? Do you have any pointers for me? How do you find a way to lift yourself and others up even inside your own head? God expects this of us.

Ephesians 4: 29-32

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Walk slow talk slow after listening thoughtfully. For me i want to jump right in but i have learned to listen for the break in the talk to speak simply and honestly you cannot avoid the world but you can influence it with out letting it stain you. I struggle every day with the same thing.

Made the apple last week, using the "slit top" method. I used 1 can filling in a 7" pie tin. It was perfect.

Heating oven now for the same pie using canned peach filling.

    Thank you for these recipes/tips.

The peach pie turned out as perfect as the apple pie. I am not a baker so, this method allows us to enjoy fruit pies in under an hour. Love the simplicity and quality of the pies.

Side bonus: Because I use a 7" pie pan, I find that I can use the left over pie dough to make cinnamon wheels to have as a snack using butter, cinnamon and sugar. Win/win.

Ok,here’s the deal,I’m in the process of making this pie the rating is basically the instructions.....I want to address the pessimistic side....I too am the same....here’s what I do...in my head I’m pessimistic but when I’m vocal I become optimistic to others...if you say it out loud optimistically ,ya really do start to think the same. Even if no ones around say it out loud....a silly optimistic comment is better than a pessimistic thought! Hope it helps is only for alittle.

Hi Margaret! I have not used tapioca when baking apple pie. I know people do, I just haven't. Mostly because when I bake apple pie, I either use a commercial filling like "canned apple pie filling" OR I make and can my own filling when I have a load of apples available.

I made this early this morning and it is great, so easy, thank you. I'm a guy, retired, live alone and sometimes bored. I've been cooking since the early 70's (had to cook or starve). Somethings I do well and always like to try new things (I love food). The reviews on the Pillsbury crusts (and there were several saying the same thing) were a concern to me so I tried Publix crusts and I was very pleased. I have spent hours looking at your recipes and now have a lot of work to do. Yum! Thanks again.

When you say "fresh ground ginger" to you mean the dried spice or do you mean a piece of ginger root ground up? Thank you for clarifying that for me.

Hi! I mean a piece of ginger root. Peel the outside skin off with a sharp knife. Then, use a grater like you would grate cheese on (use the smallest holes you have) OR use a zester if you have one and grate the ginger root. Be careful not to grate your finger tips. 🙂

This recipe is very good! I made it as written & I will use it again but for me the canned apple pie filling needs a little more cinnamon maybe about 1/2 tsp This was the first time I ever used canned apples! I have always done homemade from scratch in the past but this was a lot faster!!! In the crazy world we live in anything that can save time is a blessing!
