CAN YOU USE A STORE BOUGHT CRUST?

Yes, for this recipe you can use either a homemade crust or a store bought crust. Personally, I think the store bought refrigerated crusts from Pillsbury are excellent. Do NOT get the frozen pie crusts, those have a taste that everyone recognizes as “NOT HOMEMADE”.

HOW LONG CAN AN APPLE PIE SIT OUT?

Place your apple pie in the refrigerator within two hours. That said, my grandmother always left pie out on the counter covered with plastic wrap. I recommend the fridge though.

HOW LONG IS APPLE PIE GOOD FOR?

Your Apple Pie is good for about a week, but I’m sure that your family will have this gobbled up before a week has passed!

CAN I MAKE APPLE PIE USING FROZEN APPLES OR OTHER CANNED APPLES?

Yes, you can definitely make a apple pie using frozen apples or other canned apples, but that is the topic for a different post. Check back with Loaves and Dishes frequently for more great pie recipes!

WHAT GOES GOOD WITH APPLE PIE?

When serving your apple pie, it will be fine to serve it simply and plain, just warm it up a tad.

  • Apple pie is excellent with vanilla ice cream (use a good quality ice cream).
  • Whipped cream or even cool whip is good too.

If you want an excellent meal that you can fix yourself and end the meal with your apple pie then, I recommend the following:

  1. This Jerk Chicken is WOW or you could do a terrific Hamburger, what's more American than that? Maybe Meatloaf!
  2. These black-eyed peas taste absolutely homemade.
  3. How about a steakhouse-quality baked Potato? We all love those!
  4. Use a nice roll or loaf of bread and tell your guests to save room for your fabulous dessert!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HOW TO MAKE APPLE  PIE WITH APPLE PIE FILLING

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium-sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
  • The pie always tastes just fine if you forget to paint with an egg wash at the end BUT it will look much prettier and finished with the egg wash. The egg wash browns the top of the pie perfectly.
  • If you only have one can of pie filling, that is fine, it will make a fine pie, the pie will simply be thinner.
  • Always place a baking sheet under your pie in the oven because sometimes pies drip and no one wants a mess in their oven.
  • Feel free to cut pretty designs into your pie top. If this is your FIRST apple pie, you might want to go with simple slits. Don’t forget the slits because steam has to escape and that is how it gets out.
  • You can also cut your upper pie crust into strips and weave the top for a nice effect.

Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts the kind that comes rolled up. I use Pillsbury. Don’t use the store brand.
  • 2 21 oz can of apple pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon real lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon fresh ground ginger
  • 1 egg white

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425.
  • Line a 9” pie plate with one of your pie crusts, set the other to the side. (Do not crimp the edges of the pie yet)
  • Pour the apple pie filling into a medium sized bowl. Be sure to scrape the side of the can with a rubber spatula to get all of the filling out.
  • Using your rubber spatula, gently mix the lemon juice and ginger into the apple pie filling.
  • Once well incorporated, pour the pie filling into the pie crust that is in the pie plate.
  • Use the other pie crust and lay it over the surface of the apple pie filling, centering it so that the edges come together.
  • Make your fingers damp with a little water and crimp the edges of the pie together by pinching them to make a fluted design. If you aren’t sure how to do this, you can instead use the tines of a fork to mash the two pie crusts together.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the pie crust
  • Using a pastry brush, the back of a spoon or even a barbecue brush paint the top crust with the egg white completely.
  • Place on the center rack of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the pie filling appears to be bubbling. You will want to place a baking sheet below your pie to catch any drips while it is baking.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool well before serving.

Notes

  • Empty the pie filling into a medium sized bowl and add the flavorings and then mix
***If you prefer a crispier bottom crust, prebake the bottom pie crust in the pie plate for 5-10 minutes until it is as brown as you prefer. This recipe as written makes the pie crust so that it is more moist which may or may not be to your liking.

A VERSE TO SHARE.

I’m going to admit something to you. I have a real problem. Inside my own head I am quite negative about things. I would be so ashamed if someone could hear what goes on in there.

Do you do this too?

You know that we become what we allow ourselves to be associated with, right? That goes for our thoughts too!

For me, it isn’t hard to avoid things in the world, but it IS hard to control my own thoughts, and yet I must. You do too.

How do you do it? Do you have any pointers for me? How do you find a way to lift yourself and others up even inside your own head? God expects this of us.

Ephesians 4: 29-32

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

I made an apple pie with bought crust & canned pie filling.
Only two things. When mixing the ginger with pie filling, next time I will take some of the syrup from the cans and mix in the powdered ginger well , then add it back to the pie filling & mix well. I did not do this & the ginger did not want to mix well. It was sm. Lumps which I had to take out and mix & then add back. Also my apple pie filling to me was not sweet enough so I added about a 1/4 cu. Of light brown sugar to the mixture. It tasted a lot better. The pie filling was just not quite sweet enough. Now it’s going to
    Be a pretty good pie.

My two young boys were set on making a pie for Pi Day. Only ever having made a no-bake pie, I thought I needed to do better than that for our Pi Day celebration! (The Dr Seuss Learning Library book is an awesome accompaniment for the celebration 🙂 I found this recipe and viola- it made a liar out of me- all the sudden I was this star pastry chef! No, but seriously, we were blown away by the taste and the beauty of it. We made a lattice design for the top crust, and my 8yo artist breezed through the weave design thanks to the video tutorial (my spacial skills lacked a bit on that part, so I’m glad I had his help!). This is our go-to recipe now, and all the sudden we love eating and baking pies! 🙂

Either will work, but a pie dish bakes a little more evenly usually.

@Esteban, I always use a glass or the deep dish pan that is from Walkins. Both work great.

But look it up because they do different things.

Opened a can of apple pie filling , more sauce than apples….Can I peel fresh apples to add to it or would this not be a good idea. If so should I cook then a little first.? I would add another can of filling but unfortunately I can’t get to store due to surgery? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Pat

You can add fresh apples, but you'll need to cook them first. I would suggest going to the "fried apples" recipe and following that. Make the fried apples, add those to your can of apple pie filling and that should work. You don't want to just cut up apples and add them because they won't have the right seasonings for the pie filling.

Just added refrigerated pie crusts and ginger root to my grocery list and a couple of cans each of apple and cherry pie filling. I have the rest of the ingredients. It’s winter here in Michigan and the snow flakes are falling. Time to make those pies and sit in the dining room with a cup of hot coffee and pie and watch people go to work, rise my cup in the air to thank them for contributing to my social security check

Esteban, that totally sounds like a plan to me! I don't know (I need to go look) if I included in these recipes to allow the pies to cool completely before cutting or the contents will ooze out on the plate (which is always fine with me, but some people like a piece of pie that comes out in one piece, lol).
