Tips and Tricks for How To Cook Food

For most recipes there are simple tricks you can use to make it taste great!

These include some of the following..

  • Substitute chicken broth for the water
  • Add garlic or onion powder (not salt)
  • Put a little heat in there! Add some cayenne or hot sauce. (just a tiny amount).
  • Add some smokey flavor! (bacon, liquid smoke).
  • What about a tiny bit of sweet? (sugar, honey, maple syrup).
  • Fat. A dirty word? Never! Add a little oil or butter. You won't be sorry!

PRO TIP:  Nearly every dish can benefit from a little acid. Just a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar will brighten a dish up in no time!

Ingredients

  • 1 can any type of canned vegetable this works for any unsweet vegetable
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbs butter
  • ¼ teaspoon hot sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a sauce pan on the stove top at medium heat.
  • Stir frequently until heated through.

Notes

  • Any vegetable will benefit from the addition of sugar (sweet), hot sauce (heat), lemon juice (acid) and butter (fat).
  • You can substitute any type of fat for the butter:  oil, bacon grease, etc.
  • It's acceptable to substitute any sweet for the sugar such as maple syrup, honey, raw sugar, etc.  Just be aware that maple syrup and honey also lend their own flavors.
  • Feel free to substitute other kinds of heat such as cayenne instead of hot sauce.
PRO TIP:  Always taste before serving.  If for any reason the flavor is off, add salt and pepper, stir, taste again.  Only add small amounts and retaste with each addition.

    Hi Wendy!

I gotta say ...I am HIGHLY.. impressed with what you have to say and show! I have only gotten through a few of your pages and you are truly AMAZING! To the point, you know what you're doing and you give the best advice for cooking.. cookware and well, everything I see and read! WOW!

I happened to find myself on your page as I was trying to find out the name for the Thing-a-ma-jig.. that mashes your beans for Bean Burritos.
One thing took me somewhere else, and then....sigh. I was just about to give up on my search for a kitchen device that turns and has a handle and mashes beans....sigh..

And then..it happened! You were talking about a Food Mill!! TAA DAA!
My Mom had one and I used to mash the beans for Burittos. She would use kidney beans ...so great for Burittos. She would add Bacon to the mix,
a few spices and then fry the shells in oil. Add what ever we wished for. I miss her and that bean masher.

But thanks to you I can have what I am looking for and a few memories of my Mom too..:)
(it looks like the one I used 60 years ago). Thanks Wendy!

I did, of course, immediately sign up for your Newsletter. As we all are, I am a busy old lady, but I look forward to your advice and recipes and your charming personality! What a find you are!👍🌻🌞🥣🍰🍜💚

    Just Lovely, you are Wendy!
