Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Do Mashed Potatoes Freeze Well?

Yes, mashed potatoes freeze just fine and will last in the freezer for about 6 months!

How Do I Reheat Frozen Mashed Potatoes?

Frozen Mashed potatoes can be reheated by….

  1. thawing the mashed potatoes in the refrigerator for 24 hours,
  2. by laying the freezer bag in a bowl of cool water and allowing it to float there for an hour or
  3. by microwaving on the “thaw” setting.

Then,

  • Heat over medium heat on the stove top, stir frequently. You may need to add a little milk or chicken stock to thin them slightly.

How Do I Thaw Frozen Mashed Potatoes?

Frozen Mashed potatoes can be reheated by….

  • thawing the mashed potatoes in the refrigerator for 24 hours,
  • by laying the freezer bag in a bowl of cool water and allowing it to float there for an hour or
  • by microwaving on the “thaw” setting.

Can I Freeze Mashed Potatoes That Have Already Been Cooked?

Yes! Absolutely, simply follow the instructions given below and you’ll have perfect potatoes  to reheat for later.

How Long are Frozen Mashed Potatoes Good For?

Frozen Mashed Potatoes are good for about 6 months from the date you froze it. If kept strictly at freezing, then it will be good for much longer, but in most cases a home freezer doesn’t keep things quite that frosty.

Is It Better to Do This Before or After Cooking?

I like to freeze mine after cooking. The texture and consistency is better that way.

How Far In Advance Can You Make Mashed Potatoes?

You can make mashed potatoes up to 2 days before you plan to use them. When ready to use, heat on the stove top over low heat, add a little milk and stir frequently.

Can Frozen Mashed Potatoes Go Bad?

Yes, they can. If you notice freezer burn, ice crystals packed into the bag or an off smell when thawing, then throw them away.

    This is important:

To keep good texture and consistency, use half and half, not milk, or even better, light cream. Lots of real butter. The thing about mashed potatoes is they will develop minute crystals which can make potatoes have a grainy texture when frozen. Using lots of fat to coat the potatoes thoroughly will keep that from happening. Add a bit more half-and-half, etc., when reheating.
