Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I Make Fruit Skewers the Day Before?

Yes! Absolutely, it holds up GREAT for a day or so! You can either, prepare the fruit and then wait to put on skewers the day of OR go ahead and put the fruit on the kabobs and then CAREFULLY lay them on a platter until time for your party.

PRO TIP:  Cover well with plastic wrap and do NOT put any red fruit on top of pineapple (it tends to drip and stain the pineapple pink)

Do You Soak Skewers for Fruit Kabob?

For this recipe, we are not grilling the fruit kabobs, so NO you do not need to soak the skewers. However, if you plan to grill the fruit (which probably tastes pretty good), then yes, you will want to soak the skewers in water before using to cut down on charring.

How Do You Make Fruit Skewers Stand Up?

Fruit skewers need a little help standing up! There are several ways to do this...

  1. You can put the fruit skewers into a sturdy round base (like a heavy cup). Be careful of tipping. You can see this in my photos.
  2. Try sticking the skewers down into florists foam covered with colored plastic wrap.
  3. The best way? I think that is to cut your fruit from half a cantaloupe or watermelon rind, turn the rind over, poke or drill holes the size of your skewers and then use those holes to hold your skewers.

How Do You Make a fruit kabobs ?

To Make a Fruit Kebab, simple cut fruit into bite sized pieces and the slide them onto a skewer. You can mix and match fruit or you can put a single type of fruit on one skewer! Get Creative and ENJOY!

Where Do I Find Skewers?

We use the skewers that you can find in the grocery store in the grilling section. They are about 10" long and have a sharp end and a blunt end. Usually made from bamboo. If you are going to be making skewers often, then you might benefit from purchasing stainless steel sticks.

What Fruits Work Well For fruit kabobs ?

We like our favorite fruits that are more sturdy and holds up to the skewer better and yet doesn't discolor!

Try these fresh fruit...

  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries

Avoid Because of Discoloring:

  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Banana
  • Peach

These will probably fall apart:

  • Blackberry
  • Raspberry

PRO TIP:  If you MUST use a fruit that discolors easily, mix up 2 Tbs of lemon juice and 2 Tbs water, dip the fruit in this mix and then use. This helps prevent discoloration

Tips and Tricks for Fruit Skewers and Fruit Dip

  • Cut the fruit pieces into even size pieces.
  • If you plan to grill the fruit, put like fruits on the same skewer together.
  • Put about 4-5 pieces on a bamboo skewers together and allow room at one end for holding it.
  • If you prefer a yogurt dipping sauce, try add a few spoonfuls of yogurt to the mix
  • Here's some great info about how long you can keep fruit out!

PRO TIP:  If you need to save this fruit dip for a few hours or overnight, add 3 Tbs of sour cream to the whipped cream mixture and mix well, this prevents it from slumping.

Ingredients

For Fruit Skewers

  • Bite size pieces of cantaloupe pineapple and strawberries

For Fruit Dip

  • 1 block of cream cheese – at room temp
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 cup of whipping cream
  • 1 lemon - zest and juice
  • ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon almond extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pineapple juice

Instructions

  • For the skewers - Slide the pieces of cut fruit onto the 8” skewers in an alternating pattern and set aside. (do this right before you plan to serve – fruit starts to look ugly after it has been cut and is sitting for a while). (The dip, however, you can make the day before and it keeps beautifully overnight in the fridge).
  • In a stand mixer bowl (or in a large kitchen bowl in which you can easily use a hand mixer), mix together the softened cream cheese and the powdered sugar and a medium speed (watch out for flying powdered sugar when you turn the mixer on – start at a slower speed and then speed up).
  • Add in the whipping cream and whip together until soft peaks form. Add the zest and juice of one lemon and mix well. Add both extracts and salt. Mix. Add in pineapple juice a small amount at the time until your desired consistency is achieved.

Notes

  • Cut the fruit into even size pieces.
  • If you plan to grill the fruit, put like fruits on the same skewer together.
  • Put about 4-5 pieces on a skewer together and allow room at one end for holding it.
PRO TIP:  If you need to save this fruit dip for a few hours or overnight, add 3 Tbs of sour cream to the whipped cream mixture and mix well, this prevents it from slumping.

In your recipe there is no mention of lemon. I am a little confused lol do you add IF you want a lemon taste or should it be used in the recipe for delicious dip???

      Hi Cindy,

Add the lemon just after the whipping cream. It doesn't make the dip taste lemony so much as it just gives it that boost of acidity to balance the fat. I hope you give it a try!
