YES! Navy Beans are loaded with protein and other good stuff like fiber and are low in fat. Beans DO have carbs so if you are low carbing, be careful.

How To Cook Navy Beans in the Oven.

Simply follow the recipe below, BUT,

  • Cook your bacon in a pan first and
  • Add that cooked bacon and the bacon fat to the rest of the ingredients.
  • Pour those ingredients into an appropriate sized baking dish (1 quart) that has been sprayed with non stick spray.
  • Heat at 350 for 20-30 minutes.

NOTES:

  1. You can size up the recipe for as many people as you want to feed (if you are sizing up for more people, the beans will need to bake longer - up to 45 minutes).
  2. The recipe as written feeds 2 people.

Navy beans are excellent in the crockpot because they can stand up to heating for a while. Use the recipe below, BUT,

  1. First cook the bacon in a skillet and add that bacon, the bacon grease and the rest of the ingredients to the crockpot.
  2. Heat on low for 3-6 hours.

Remember that this recipe serves 2 people and if your crockpot is the typical size 3-4 quarts, you will need to increase the recipe by at least 2 or maybe 3 times.

Ingredients

  • 1 slice of thick cut bacon cut into 5 pieces (regular thickness is fine if that is what you have)
  • 1 14.5 ounce can of navy beans drained
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon vinegar white or cider
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional

Instructions

  • In a medium sized saucepan, over medium heat, place the bacon pieces and allow to fry till crispy.
  • Add the beans, water, sugar, salt, pepper, vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper (optional) to the bacon pieces and bacon grease and stir
  • Stir frequently until heated through and bubbly throughout.  Serve hot and offer hot sauce, chopped onion or chopped jalapeno as garnish.

Notes

  • Pour off the water from the can of beans, it doesn’t taste that good.
  • This recipe is for 2 people, if you want to serve more people, you will have to increase the recipe by as many people as you need to serve.  Don’t forget to increase the spices as well.
PRO TIP:  If you don't have ALL of the spices, that is ok, use what you DO have.  The main idea is to get a little oil (bacon grease) smoked flavor (bacon), sweetness (sugar), salt, pepper, heat (cayenne) and acid (vinegar) into the recipe.  Some substitutions that you could make include:
For vinegar:  white vinegar, lemon juice.
Bacon: 1 tbs vegetable oil or any other oil, 1 tbs butter PLUS ¼ teaspoon liquid smoke.
Sugar:  same amount of honey, maple syrup, raw sugar, brown sugar.

A VERSE TO SHARE

Here is a super hard thing for me, I'll just share it. Maybe it is hard for you too. I tend to get pretty darn judgy. Never out loud, never directly face to face but in quiet, inside my own head. Do you?

You know what the book of John has to say about that? It hurts if you are guilty...

John 6:37

Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
