Canned new potatoes are simply small baby potatoes dug from the field and peeled before being canned. You Can eat straight from the can because they have already been cooked through. You'll notice  they taste better if you add a few ingredients for seasoning (see the recipe at the bottom of the page)

ARE CANNED NEW POTATOES HEALTHY?

As usual, canned new potatoes are healthy, depending on what you are looking for in your diet. Potatoes are part of a healthy balanced diet. That said, if you are on a low carb diet or a diabetic diet, then these white potatoes might not be the perfect thing for you.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE CANNED NEW POTATOES?

The very best way to prepare canned new potatoes is to follow the recipe found at the bottom of this post. They are delicious, satisfying and affordable!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR CANNED NEW POTATOES

  • Make sure to drain the water from the canned potatoes and use fresh tap water in the recipe.
  • Some canned foods can be more salty than others, taste before adding salt and pepper and also be careful if you have any issues with salt in your diet.
  • Try your potatoes with some other spices, you may find you might like things like cumin, thyme, rosemary or other delicious spices! Potatoes are like a blank canvas!
  • Do not give whole canned potatoes to a toddler as the small round potatoes could pose a choking hazard. Cut them or mash them up first.

Whenever I've used tinned potatoes all I've done is put them in a saucepan, heated them up and serve with just a small knob of butter.

I decided to look to see if there was any way of making them better because I was having belly pork marinated in maple and didn't have fresh potatoes.

Your recipe sounded nice so gave it a go (Didn't have unsalted butter so used "I can't believe it's not butter, light". And they were amazing.

Thanks for sharing. Have written recipe down and will use it all the time with tinned spuds. Also going to try it with fresh potatoes.

Wayne, I'm so glad that you found this recipe useful! It will work with fresh potatoes too, but you'll want to cook them through first and then start the process of this recipe. Be sure to salt the water you cook your fresh potatoes in. I hope you'll take a look around, there are a lot of recipes here for canned vegetables that you might find useful. Take care and let me know if I can help with anything else!

Do you drain the liquid at the end? The liquid seems to wash the lovely buttery coating off, I'm not sure if I'm making it right, it doesn't look like your picture, help!

@Wendi Spraker, The first time I made this, I didn't drain the water and thought it lost the flavor too. I am making again tonight and I'm going to skip the water. 😋

Can I use these potatoes for making potato salad. I hate the boiling process of making this. Either they are over done or not done enough😕 do you think these may work??

Elena. I’ve never tried using canned potatoes. My gut feeling is no. It probably wouldn’t work very well because new potatoes in the can break easily. Let me get to my desk top and I’ll write you an email to help with boiling.

YES you can use them for making potato salad and they work extremely well because they are very firm and do not fall apart. boil them in a pan for 5mins, drain, then slice/dice when cool and add to your dressing and refrigerate for a few hours.

Canned potatoes are already cooked, and they fall apart too easily to be used in potato salad

I was looking for a good recipe to go with the balsamic chicken that I am planning to make tonight for my husband and I ... both are new recipes that I have never tried before. The last time that I tried to spruce up some canned potatoes, he was not impressed... he says that it “tastes like the can”. But emptying the canned water might do the trick! I will definitely let you know how it turns out!
On a second note, the reason why I am posting a review prior to making the recipe is because I am in complete and in total awe over your willingness to publicly self disclose your personal values and faith in our Lord. In today’s day and age, that takes a lot of guts and I am beyond impressed and you have my complete admiration for being so brave. Although I could continue on and on by responding in support of your values, I will refrain and instead keep this short in support of your recipes.

WENDY! (FIRST, YOU have a GREAT name!). I hope the potatoes turn out JUST like you want! Secondly, there is no brave here, instead if you want to see change then you have to be willing to stand in the gap. I, for one, am grieved over the bad rap that Christians have made for ourselves. Therefore, I will stand out in LOVE for any one to see. Jesus sent me here to love others not to judge. He said that very specifically. I believe if God gives you a talent then you are to use it to HIS service and if you have a stage and a moment of someone's time then you MUST say what you came to say. I'm saying it here to anyone who will listen. Amen? Amen. Enjoy the potatoes and if I can be of any other service, I welcome your notes, questions and comments.

Haven't used it yet - but will tomorrow. Just wanted to say that your comment "If you want to see change you have to stand in the gap" was just what I needed to hear today! I determined I could not sit politely by and say nothing while friends share fake and false "news". I will stand in the gap and call it out!!

My kids are picky eaters and I knew that if just heated these potatoes up, put some salt and pepper on them, then put them on their plate, there would’ve been a lot of moaning and groaning about having to eat them. So I searched for a recipe, found this one, and went with it. I do not cook on a regular basis so the easier the recipe, the better. This was very easy to do, and after taking a bite, with a shocked face, I told the kids I couldn’t believe I made something that tasted this good. They both immediately took a bite for themselves and were equally surprised! I will definitely make this again. Thank you!
