Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Can I Freeze a Pie That Has Already Been Baked?

Yes! Absolutely, simply follow the instructions given below and you’ll have a perfect pie to reheat for later.

Can I Freeze An Apple Pie That I Just Made But Haven’t Baked?

Sure! That’s exactly the right thing to do to save your pie for later. Freeze it for up to 6 months.

How Long Is a Frozen Apple Pie Good For?

A frozen apple pie is good for about 6 months from the date you froze it. If kept strictly at freezing, then it will be good for much longer, but in most cases a home freezer doesn’t keep things quite that frosty.

Does Apple Pie Need to be Refrigerated?

Yes. You need to keep your apple pie in the refrigerator. I’m sure your granny, just like mine, would leave pie out on the counter BUT today we know that it’s best to keep it in the fridge.

Is It Better to Freeze an Apple Pie Before or After Baking?

Either is fine. I like to freeze mine before baking, but after is fine too. I like to freeze mine before because I feel that the texture and consistency is better that way.

How Do I Cook a Frozen Apple Pie?

  • If you froze the pie before baking, remove it from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the fridge, then bake as you would a fresh pie.
  • Perhaps you want to bake the pie from frozen? No problem at all. Place the frozen pie in a 375 oven and bake for 55 minutes. Check after 40 minutes and if the crust is starting to over brown, place a piece of aluminum foil over the top.

Should I Prebake the Crust For An Apple Pie?

There’s no need to prebake an apple pie crust, even if you are freezing it. Apple pie filling does not make the pie soggy.

Tips and Tricks

  • Make your apple pie in a 9” aluminum pie pan for easy freezing. The 9” pie pans fit perfectly inside a gallon size freezer storage bag.
  • If you are making a double crust pie, then don’t cut the vent holes until you are ready to bake it. This will keep all of the pie inside the pie.
  • If making a single crust pie, freeze the pie uncovered on a shelf in the freezer first (about 3 hours), THEN place it into the bag. That way the filling won’t stick to the bag. Make sure to set the pie level in the freezer.
  • This works for pie filling you made yourself, canned pie filling, homemade pie crust or store bought crust.
